Occupy Oakland Headlines across various news organizations - Jan 28, 2012 #occupyoakland

January 29, 2012

Hi everyone,

For the record, I don't agree with the burning of the American flag, I thought that was wrong, and I am sure that many of the Occupy Oakland protesters thought the same. There was even another protester begging them not to. I do however support the overall movement to fight income inequality, corportism, injustices, and the fight for Internet freedom and human rights.

Thanks,
Cynthia

Occupy Oakland Headlines across various news organizations

LA Times: Occupy Oakland: Police arrest 300, officials decry 'illegal activity' "Police in riot gear faced off with demonstrators Saturday afternoon at a rally near City Hall. Hundreds of protesters then marched toward the vacant Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, where they began tearing down the fencing around the auditorium, and police moved to stop them."

CNN: Dozens arrested as Oakland, occupy protesters clash "From the beginning, the group acknowledged on its website that the action -- touted on its website as "Move-In Day" -- to take over the convention center was illegal.

But the group said the move was necessary, in part because "since November, the city of Oakland and its police force have made it impossible for us to meet, to serve food and to provide a place for people to stay." "

Oakland Tribune: Day of clashes at Occupy Oakland ends with at least 400 arrest "Occupy Oakland protesters broke into City Hall, stole an American flag from the City Council chamber and set it on fire Saturday night, punctuating a wild day in which police deployed tear gas, arrested more than 400 marchers and dodged hurling objects."

Huffington Post: Occupy Oakland: Police Teargas Protests, use flash grenades "Police used tear gas and "flash" grenades on the group Saturday afternoon after some demonstrators threw rocks and other objects at them. Police said three officers were hurt, but they released no details."

RT News: Occupy Oakland video: Police use flashbags & tear-gas against protesters  "Police in Oakland, California, have used tear-gas and flash-grenades as a 2,000-strong Occupy Oakland march turned violent, with some protesters claiming that rubber bullets were also fired into the crowd. At least 300 people were arrested.

The demonstrators had attempted to take over vacant buildings to use as their headquarters, they also broke into City Hall and tried to occupy a YMCA. Police spokesman Jeff Thomason told media most of the arrests came around 8 pm local time. Police took many protesters into custody as they marched through the city's downtown area, with some entering a YMCA building."

MSM: Assange on 'Kremlin Mouthpiece' - US MSM pissed off RT's Alyona h/t @TheAlyonaShow @Wikileaks

Jan 25, 2012

RT had some very big news to announce that Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, is going to be launching a talk show, which will be broadcast by this network. It will be called, "The World Tomorrow", and will consist of 10 weekly episodes where he interviews what he calls, "iconoclasts, visionaries, and power insiders". But before even seeing the program, we've already seen judgments made loud and clear.

Say NO to ACTA - It's going global, soon to affect you personally

January 28, 2012

ACTA is one more offensive against the sharing of culture on the Internet. ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is an agreement secretly negotiated by a small "club" of like-minded countries (39 countries, including the 27 of the European Union, the United States, Japan, etc). Negotiated instead of being democratically debated, ACTA bypasses parliaments and international organizations to dictate a repressive logic dictated by the entertainment industries. ACTA, a blueprint for laws such as SOPA and PIPA, would impose new criminal sanctions forcing Internet actors to monitor and censor online communications. It is thus a major threat to freedom of expression online and creates legal uncertainty for Internet companies. In the name of trademarks and patents, it would also hamper access to generic medicines in poor countries. The European Parliament now has an ultimate opportunity to reject ACTA. Read more here.

January 27, 2012

President Barack Obama on Thursday rebutted his Republican critics, like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who have accused him of having a “politics of envy.”

“Do we want to keep these tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans or do we want to keep investing in everything else?” he said at an event in Las Vegas. “We can’t do both.”

Obama said that those making over a million dollars a year should pay a tax rate of at least 30 percent, his so-called Buffett rule, and noted that Bill Gates had a similar view.

When recently asked about his support for Latino rights, the mayor of East Haven, Connecticut said that he “might have some tacos” for dinner. Little did he know, a local group of activists would be happy to take him up on that.

Days later, 500 tacos showed up at Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr.’s office, courtesy of local activists with The Campaign to Reform Immigration for America. Sadly, he wasn’t there to receive them.
